Norwalk honors Angel Tree and Stuff a Bus sponsors; announces student winners for recycling calendar

The Norwalk City Council on Feb. 4 recognized sponsors of the social services Angel Tree program and Norwalk Transit’s Stuff a Bus event and announced winners of a student recycling-art contest funded by CalRecycle.

City Manager Jesus Gomez read names of sponsor categories and individual sponsors, thanking donors including Tom and Marie Jackson and Position Diagnostic Imaging Inc. The council called forward diamond, silver and major sponsors for photographs and public recognition.

The Stuff a Bus program, Norwalk staff said, visits local schools so students can donate unwrapped toys; schools recognized at the meeting included Neddy Waite Middle School, John Glenn High School and Norwalk High School. City staff thanked volunteers, school participants and transit staff who collect and distribute donated items.

Michelle Nichols of Nichols Consulting described the beverage-container recycling and litter-prevention artwork contest, which she said was funded by a CalRecycle grant and open to fifth-grade students in Norwalk. Nichols said lesson materials and classroom presentations accompanied the contest; winners from Pattison, New River and Euffer Elementary Schools were called forward and received certificates and a group photo with council.

Vice Mayor Perez and members of the council praised the volunteers and staff. The city publicly thanked contractors, nonprofit partners and community groups for supporting the holiday distribution and the student contest.

No council action was required for the recognitions. The city encouraged residents to check the Norwalk Now publication or the city website for ongoing volunteer and donation opportunities.
