Council honors Grant High Pacers after state championship

The Sacramento City Council on Jan. 21 recognized Grant High School’s football team, the Pacers, for winning the CIF state championship, presenting a resolution signed by all nine members and accepting the team’s trophy at City Hall.

Council members praised the team’s on-field performance and academic record. Council member Lisa Dickinson, who led the presentation, highlighted the players’ classroom success and the community pride the championship generated.

“When they're state champs, they're great football players. They're great people. They are great students,” Council member Lisa Dickinson said, adding that the team averaged a 3.3 grade-point average.

Coach Reid (identified in the meeting as the co-head coach) thanked the council and described the playoff run and travel demands. “These young men put all the work in. I mean we're just the ones who put them in the position. They have to go out there and play and do the work in the classroom and on the field,” Coach Reid said, adding the team travelled approximately 1,200 miles during the playoff run.

Council member Jennings said the recognition was for the students’ achievement and urged continued community support, and other council members noted plans for rallies, banquets and potential appearances at Kings games to celebrate the team.

The council indicated the signed resolution will be displayed publicly. The presentation included remarks from school staff, trustees and elected officials; no formal council vote on the resolution was recorded in the meeting transcript beyond the ceremonial presentation.
