Cumberland County commissioners on Jan. 9 directed the Policy Committee to draft updated procedures for boards and commissions appointments, aiming to improve transparency, application tracking and the cadence of appointments.
County staff described the current process: residents apply online via a basic form (no supplemental questions or resume upload); applications were historically stored without an application date; liaisons to boards receive applicant lists and may forward recommendations to the clerk; the usual practice is to present nominations and make appointments at board meetings. Staff said they will add application dates to tracking spreadsheets and requested board direction on changes.
Commissioners suggested adding supplemental questions, allowing resume uploads, setting an annual application window (so residents renew interest), and moving to a twice‑a‑year appointment schedule to reduce confusion about openings. The board voted unanimously to refer revised policy and procedures to the Policy Committee and asked that drafts be distributed to all commissioners before being placed on the Jan. 21 agenda.
