Facilities committee lists capital needs: wastewater testing, fuel pump replacement, HVAC grant, auditorium work and summer projects

The Octorara Area School District facilities committee presented a range of maintenance and capital items during the Feb. 10 meeting, including environmental testing, compliance items, an anticipated fuel-dispenser replacement, HVAC grant opportunities and summer work priorities.
Committee members said updates on wastewater treatment-plant testing are ongoing and that PreDoc continues to update test results; additional contractor testing has occurred. A Liberty Mutual compliance inspection flagged playground mulch and some playground/equipment repairs.
The committee reported that an original diesel dispenser froze and may need replacement; the estimated replacement cost discussed during the meeting was “about $85,000 to $100,000.” Committee members said the district is performing asset inventory and considering purchase of a heavier-duty utility vehicle for grounds work and snow removal.
On larger capital items, the committee said the district qualified for a $250,000 grant to replace a junior-high chiller; the chiller estimate was roughly $325,000, leaving an expected district contribution of about $125,000 unless the work is bundled into a larger future project. Committee members discussed whether to proceed immediately or include the chiller replacement in a larger renovation for efficiency.
Summer work under discussion included continuing asbestos removal in four classrooms per year at the middle school, auditorium roof replacement (the roof has been patched but continues to leak), high-school library updates (carpet and lighting), PLC classroom painting and potential relocation or winterization work contingent on any building realignment decisions. Committee members also discussed driveway improvements to the middle-school softball field using either millings or paving and the possibility of an additional middle-school-field parking lot and an ADA-compliant walkway along Route 401.
The facilities committee said it is in an information-gathering stage and will continue to obtain cost estimates and prioritize projects for future action.
