Committee begins broader review of school calendar and holiday schedule, will gather more community input

At the end of the Oct. 23 meeting the School Committee discussed renewed community interest in reassessing the district calendar and certain school holidays.

Committee members said the conversation should be holistic — examining vacations, professional-development scheduling, and staffing implications — rather than focusing on a single set of religious or cultural day changes. One member noted prior community advocacy around observances such as Diwali and Eid and urged that those groups be explicitly re-engaged before any change. "I wanna make sure there's a lot of transparency, and those same groups that came before us have the opportunity to come back and express how they felt," a committee member said.

Why it matters: Calendar changes can affect families, staff schedules, staffing availability (including coverage when neighboring districts do not have the same days off), collective-bargaining considerations, and transportation logistics. Committee members noted the district's 2025 calendar is already set and that any review would not be intended to change next year's calendar quickly; instead they proposed a longer process including surveys, forums and outreach to neighboring districts.

The group would report back with options and recommendations for committee consideration well before any implementation timeline.
