Senator Steve Kroll (Senate District 3) told the committee SB206 raises the per‑student cap for a literacy tutoring grant from $500 to $1,500. He said the program currently has about $9 million in one‑time funds and that the change would not hit the general revenue but would reduce the length of time the fund balance would last.
Kroll said last year about 5,398 students participated and that roughly 30% used the full allotment. Jacob Alleva of the Department of Education told the committee the funds are one‑time and, at the current rate, would last roughly two to two‑and‑a‑half years unless additional funding is supplied in future budgets. Committee questions confirmed the grant pays “up to” the cap and that many participants do not expend the full amount.
Committee members raised no objections; the committee approved SB206 by voice vote and the bill advanced to the next stage.
