The board voted 5–0 on Feb. 24 to revise Policy 3110 and discontinue the district’s early-entrance-to-kindergarten exemption for 4-year-old children.
District staff presented data showing 24 students tested for early entry over four years; 13 passed the assessments and several struggled to meet kindergarten benchmarks. The presentation noted that expectations for kindergarten have risen and that the district now offers transitional kindergarten for younger children as well as an acceleration policy for students who demonstrate advanced skills.
Chief academic staff and testing coordinators recommended discontinuing the early-entrance exemption and relying on transitional kindergarten and acceleration procedures where appropriate. The board approved the revision unanimously.
