City introduces ordinance to add recently annexed property to single-member council district; first reading only

Taylor City Council on Feb. 13, 2025 introduced Ordinance No. 2025-06, which would add recently annexed territory to a single-member city council district. The item was presented as a first reading; no council action was required or taken and the formal public hearing will occur at the council's next meeting.

Carly (staff) presented the item on behalf of Scott Dunlap, director of development services, explaining that the parcel is newly annexed and borders two council districts. Because the property's primary use is industrial, staff recommended assigning the acreage to District 2, which staff said contains the most industrial uses. Carly said the recommendation is intended to place the parcel in the district most compatible with its industrial designation.

City Attorney Mary Mitchell read the caption into the record: "Ordinance number 2025Dash06. An ordinance of the city council, the city of Taylor, Texas approving the addition of recently annexed territory to single member city council district and providing for an effective date." The council was reminded that this was the ordinance's first reading and no formal vote was required at this meeting. Staff indicated the public hearing and any required vote will occur at a subsequent meeting.

No formal motion or vote on the ordinance was taken on Feb. 13.

Next steps: staff will place the ordinance for public hearing at the next council meeting and return with the required documentation and formal action for adoption or other disposition.
