Piedmont schools adopt adjunct teacher and proficiency-based promotion policies

Summary
The board added a policy to allow adjunct (alternate-certified) teachers and revised its proficiency-based promotion rules to specify timing, subject scope and performance thresholds.
The Piedmont Board of Education approved two policy changes: a new adjunct teacher policy (DBAB) to allow hiring teachers under alternate certification paths, and a revision to the proficiency-based promotion policy (EIAEP) that clarifies timing, subject scope and performance requirements.
District staff told the board the adjunct-teacher policy responds to a recent Oklahoma law that permits alternate certification for applicants with substantial subject-matter expertise even if they lack a college degree. The district said it has not needed to hire adjunct teachers to date but wants the policy in its manual so procedures are in place if such hires are needed.
On proficiency-based promotion, staff described specific changes: the district will offer the promotion opportunity in May and June, will limit proficiency-based promotion to reading and math (excluding social studies and science), and will require a 90% success rate on the relevant assessments. Staff emphasized that parents ultimately decide whether to pursue a promotion for a child so long as the student meets the testing requirement.
A motion to approve both DBAB and EIAEP passed on a roll call. The motion was made and seconded during the meeting; the recorded votes were in favor and the policies were adopted.
The board did not record additional conditions or pilot programs tied to these policies at the meeting.
