Mount Sinai board confirms opt-out from regionalization planning; joins multi-district lawsuit

Mr. Stout, a board member, told the Mount Sinai Union Free School District Board of Education that the district finalized its decision to opt out of the state's regionalization planning process on Jan. 15 and has joined a legal challenge.
Mr. Stout said the lawsuit was filed on Jan. 9 and includes 21 school districts from Nassau and Suffolk counties. He said the districts had asked the state to change the wording of the proposed policy but, according to the districts' counsel, the State Education Department "had no interest in dealing with this issue." He said the suit has an index number but that no court date has been scheduled.
The board member characterized the opt-out action and the multi-district lawsuit as separate steps: the opt-out choice and the joint litigation by districts that opposed the state policy. No board vote or further formal action on the lawsuit was recorded during the meeting.
The update answered a community question about the district's posture on regionalization planning and clarified that Mount Sinai is one of the districts involved in the filed suit.
