The Camas School District Board of Directors approved replacement of the playing turf at Doc Harris Stadium during its Oct. 22 meeting, directing staff to proceed with contracting and scheduling while deferring decisions on optional cosmetic add-ons.
Sherman, the district's facilities director, told the board the existing turf dated from a 2011 installation and needs replacement. The project's immediate scope approved by the board covers turf installation; the board declined to commit district capital funds to decorative end zones or a center-field logo pending fundraising. The center-field logo (the "C") was estimated in discussion to cost roughly $18,000; an underlayment option was discussed but staff cited independent studies and cost concerns and recommended against it at this time.
Board members discussed whether boosters or community partners might fund a center-field logo or colored end zones; several directors said they preferred fundraising for decorations rather than diverting capital funds intended for safety and core maintenance. The board approved the turf replacement and asked staff to return with final contract details and any fundraising updates before committing to cosmetic work.
Sherman said the district would finalize the turf contract and schedule installation, and that work will be funded through the capital levy. The board recorded a unanimous vote to approve turf replacement only.
