Board approves veterans' tax refunds and discusses veterans memorial plaques

The Board of Supervisors directed the treasurer to issue tax refunds to two veterans the commissioner of the revenue certified as having overpaid local taxes. The first, Tracy Argebreit, was certified for a refund of $20,854.66 under Virginia Code section 58.1‑3981; the second, Michael Clatterbuck, was certified for $16,478.15. County staff presented the certification paperwork and the county attorney said she had reviewed the documentation and recommended the refunds.
Board members made motions to direct the treasurer to issue the refunds in recognition of the taxpayers’ service; the motions were seconded and the board voted to authorize the refunds.
Separately, staff briefed the board on a veterans memorial project adjacent to the new courthouse. A veterans group asked to incorporate two plaques currently hanging in the old Stanton courthouse into the memorial park outside the new courthouse. County facilities staff inspected the plaques and reported they can be removed easily; the staff recommendation was to allow the veterans group to use the plaques in the memorial. The board did not vote formal action on the plaques during the recorded discussion but staff asked whether the board had any concerns; none were raised.
