The superintendent presented three overarching goals for the year at the Sept. 11 Greenwich Board of Education meeting, emphasizing curriculum implementation, organizational approaches to fidelity for intervention programs, and onboarding for newly elected board members. The presentation included details about several secondary-focused initiatives.
Goal 1 (instructional implementation): Staff will continue districtwide rollout of writing units, aligned pacing guides and curriculum improvements shown during the summer institute. The superintendent said metrics should continue to show progress, and she asked the board for patience as multi-year curriculum blueprints reach maturity.
Goal 2 (organizational fidelity for EL & intervention): The district will update MTSS/ intervention plans and focus on English learners and intervention consistency across K–12. The superintendent highlighted two initiatives at the secondary level: a hybrid-learning model (referred to as “HiC” / hybrid option) piloted during summer school that allows rolling enrollment and course recovery without blocking students out of electives; and an English Language Academy for newcomers that concentrates on intensive English instruction for a shorter period so students can access content classes more effectively upon reentry. Staff said the hybrid option saw “phenomenal” summer results and will expand cautiously in the year ahead.
Goal 3 (board onboarding and governance): The superintendent noted about half the board will be newly elected after November and asked the board to plan for orientation sessions, legal briefings and school visits.
The superintendent also reported organizational changes to better coordinate counseling and mental-health supports: a reworked counseling director role and convening social workers, psychologists and counselors for joint planning, threat-assessment training and clarified responsibilities. Staff said the district will present more details on mental-health coordination and on the English-Language Academy in future meetings.
Board members asked questions about capital projects, staffing and trade-offs in prioritizing secondary interventions. The superintendent said the district will continue to monitor implementation closely and report back.
