Board revisits AP/honors GPA weighting; policy committee to review proposal

The Greenwich Board of Education discussed proposed changes to the district’s GPA weighting for Advanced Placement and honors courses during the Sept. 11 meeting and agreed to send the proposal to the policy committee for further review.
Board members reviewed comparative practice in neighboring districts and discussed a model that would keep current honors weightings and add a 0.25 GPA bump for students who take AP courses (for example, moving AP courses to a 1.25 add-on above the norm). Staff said any change would not be retroactive and would be incorporated into next year’s program of studies so students can make informed course choices.
Members discussed trade-offs: some said an AP bump recognizes external exam rigor and could align district practice with college-credit incentives; others urged caution because changes can influence students’ course selections and have downstream effects. The board also raised related questions about two existing freshman-level courses (coded 113 and 113A in the handout) that historically were treated differently; trustees asked staff to examine whether those two courses should be treated equivalently for weighting.
The board did not adopt a policy change at the meeting. Several trustees asked the chair to convene the policy committee to vet technical language, clarify how the weighting applies to non-AP advanced courses, and determine implementation timing. The policy committee will hold a meeting to consider the proposed edits before bringing a draft back to the full board.
