Twelve members of the Town of Loxahatchee Groves charter review committee were sworn in and selected a chair during the group's first meeting on Oct. 22. The committee also approved its meeting agenda unanimously and agreed on a few procedural items for future sessions.
The committee took the oath of office after Gabby led members in the pledge and the oath. Town attorney Jeff Kurtz led the meeting and explained the committee's role and the timeline for any charter amendments the group might recommend to the council.
Committee members nominated and voted to select Cassie (last name not specified in the record) as chair after a motion by Erin and a second from Katie. The motion carried and Cassie assumed the chair role for the committee.
The committee approved the meeting agenda by unanimous voice vote. During the meeting the chair and members also agreed to use a simple “spirit stick” procedure for recognizing speakers so comments could be picked up on the audio record.
The committee will meet again to consider draft language on charter amendments and to provide recommendations to the town council ahead of the deadlines for a possible voter referendum. Jeff Kurtz noted the committee's work is time sensitive because language for any charter amendment ordinances would need to be ready well before the March 10, 2026 election timeline the town is targeting.
Members present and recorded at the meeting included Cassie (chair), Katie, Virginia Standish, Jeff Stevens, Jennifer, Ashley, Sam and others; the record reflects a full committee of 12 members for this session.
