Residents urge public process and green‑space protection for 1201 Livernois (Coolick property)

A Ferndale resident speaking during call to audience said a growing coalition of residents, local businesses and environmental organizations is urging city leaders to pursue a transparent, community‑led process for the future of the Coolick property at 1201 Livernois and to prioritize public use and green‑space preservation.

“I’m here tonight on behalf of a growing coalition of Ferndale residents, local businesses, and environmental organizations united by a shared goal, to secure a public community centered future for the Coolick property at 1201 Livernois,” said Eddie Sabatini, who identified himself and his address and said he accepted an invitation to serve on the Ferndale Schools Facilities Committee.

Sabatini said the coalition understands the Ferndale Public Schools is exploring a potential sale or land swap with the city and that the coalition does not advocate for a single outcome but seeks an open, collaborative process that prioritizes ecological stewardship, migratory bird habitat and equitable public access. He asked city leaders to publicly disclose timelines for negotiations, host a dedicated public forum (not only a regular council meeting) and commit to protecting or expanding green space on the site.

Sabatini said the Detroit Bird Alliance (also referenced in public comments) has joined the coalition and that the group is prepared for a long engagement to produce a shared vision for the site. Council did not act on the request at the meeting; staff did not provide new negotiation details during call to audience.
