Eddie Sabatini, a Ferndale resident, told city council during the call‑to‑audience that a growing coalition of residents, businesses and environmental organizations seeks a public, community‑centered process for the future of the Coolick property at 1201 Livernois.
Sabatini said the coalition has been in direct talks with the Ferndale Schools Board of Education, which is exploring a possible land swap or sale, and asked city leadership to publicly disclose timelines and negotiation details in advance so residents can engage. He asked the city to host a dedicated public forum — beyond a regular council meeting — to gather meaningful input, to commit to protecting and expanding public green space on the site and to prioritize ecological stewardship and equitable access.
Sabatini said the Detroit Bird Alliance (listed in the transcript as "Detroit Bridal Alliance") had joined the coalition and that the site has ecological value including potential migratory bird habitat. He identified himself as accepting an invitation to serve on the Ferndale Schools Facilities Committee to advocate for a community voice regardless of ultimate ownership.
The council did not take action during the meeting; staff and council heard the request as part of public comment and will consider next steps for engagement if formal negotiations proceed.
