The Redondo Beach City Council on Tuesday accepted the donation of a police service dog from the Torrance Police Department and approved a donation, release and waiver agreement to bring the animal into the Redondo Beach Police Department.
Chief Hoffman introduced the dog as Max, a 4‑year‑old Dutch shepherd trained for patrol operations. The chief said Max graduated from a basic canine academy in January, served in Torrance until his handler retired and is now available to Redondo Beach because Torrance could not assign a new handler.
Hoffman said Max has a high drive and strong work ethic and that the department has an available handler to take the dog. The chief also said K‑9 Ace — currently in Redondo Beach — will remain in the department with a new role focusing on explosive‑detection duties rather than patrol certifications.
Why it matters: police K‑9 teams are used for patrol support, tracking, suspect apprehension and some detection tasks. A donated, certified service dog can provide a trained resource without the capital expense of purchasing and initial training.
