New Garden and Greenwood construction on schedule and on budget, facilities director reports

The district's facilities staff reported progress on two new elementary-school construction projects and on several ongoing facility upgrades.
Facilities staff said New Garden Elementary is about halfway complete and Greenwood Elementary about 40% complete. At New Garden, concrete-masonry unit (CMU) walls and poured foundations are complete, brickwork was reported at about 80% finished, terrazzo installation has begun in hallways and many windows and temporary power are in place. Staff said the first roadway back to the new New Garden building should be installed within a month.
At Greenwood, construction activity has moved to the front of the site where the temporary playground had been located; crews have installed one of three underground stormwater-retention basins (described as roughly a football-field footprint and about 15 feet deep), with more basins to follow. Facilities staff reported slab floors poured, roofing progressing, CMU walls in place, fiber-optic relocation to the northern side of the site and temporary hookups to the existing building. The contractor presence was described as 50 to 80 trades on site daily with a projected increase during the school year.
Facilities staff also highlighted recent work elsewhere in the district: three rooftop units worth about $850,000 were craned into Mary D. Lang; the high-school Reynolds gym received fresh paint; the TV studio received new equipment and lighting; LED hallway replacements and a new auditorium projection system were near completion; and Kennett Middle School's gymnasium is receiving a new audio system.
Furniture selection for both new buildings is complete and will be packaged for bidding with coordination by the district's architect. Facilities staff said bids and specifications are scheduled to be wrapped up in August.
