During the May 27 meeting the Saline County Board of Commissioners recognized two recipients of the Oliver Hagg Scholarships, each worth $1,000 and renewable for up to three additional years provided recipients meet GPA and program requirements and submit transcripts.
David Flaherty, Livestock and Expo Director, said the commission approved two $1,000 scholarships on April 9 and introduced the recipients at the meeting. Recipients identified themselves and described their plans: Valerie Van Zant said she graduated from Salina Central and will attend the University of Minnesota Crookston to study animal science/pre-veterinary studies and play softball; Landon Albright said he graduated from Southeast of Saline High School and plans to attend Kansas State University to major in agronomy, citing family farming background and FFA as influences.
Flaherty explained scholarship conditions include maintaining at least a 3.0 GPA and remaining in ag-related fields. The commission and staff congratulated the students; presentation of certificates followed the introductions.
No formal vote was required; the awards were previously approved during the consent agenda and the presentation publicly introduced the recipients.
