Staff said the funding comes as part of Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Youth Climate Action Fund, with Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors identified to receive and administer the award. Fern Bueno of the city manager’s office told the council the city had participated in round one in 2024 and supported eight projects; round two funding will again target youth‑serving organizations and programs that align with the Long Beach Climate Action Plan.
Eligible projects will focus on reforestation and urban greening, climate education and ambassador programs, and public art and awareness campaigns, staff said. The program is expected to prioritize equity and environmental justice. Council members expressed support; Vice Mayor Yeronga and Councilwoman Zendejas both spoke in favor of the item. No public objections were raised during the hearing; the council approved the request to execute any necessary documents to accept and expend the funds.
