County authorizes advertising for major road reclamation bids; timber auction reports strong sales

Koochiching County’s highway department told the board on Feb. 11 it will advertise for bids this spring on two full-depth reclamation projects in the Little Fork area (County Road 8 — a quarter-mile finishing segment — and County Road 9 — approximately 8+ miles) with a combined engineer’s estimate of about $4.4 million. Commissioners authorized staff to advertise for bids and indicated construction would take place in summer 2025.
The board also authorized advertising for a mill-and-overlay project on Island Lake Road (shared with Itasca County) with the county’s portion estimated at $61,484.65. Highway staff said Itasca County is leading engineering and inspection for that shared project and the county would pay its portion.
Separately, the county reported results of its quarter-one timber auction near Big Falls: staff sold just under 23,000 cords for a total sale value just under $600,000. Average Aspen price reported was about $31 per cord (roughly $5 below summer highs), which staff attributed to current full wood-yard inventories and winter logging conditions.
Ending: Commissioners approved advertisement of the highway projects and noted the next timber auction is planned for early May in Big Falls.
