Multiple Coronado Village residents used the City Council’s public-comment period to ask the council to insert discussion of the Judson Independent School District’s proposed repurposing of Coronado Village Elementary on a future council agenda and to encourage residents to attend the Judson School Board meeting.
Resident Elizabeth Parker said Judson ISD staff had proposed options for repurposing the elementary campus, including moving a district alternative-education program (JCARE) that serves middle and high school students who have been removed from general classrooms. Parker said JCARE is currently located in Converse adjacent to Judson Police Department offices and that residents worry about locating such a program in Coronado Village because the school property is surrounded by more than 30 homes.
Parker cited the Texas Academic Performance Report and a category of violent and criminal incidents and asked the city to discuss “best and most suitable options” for the Coronado Village site at an upcoming council meeting; she also encouraged neighbors to attend the Judson Board meeting scheduled for Feb. 20 and a separate Judson administration session on Feb. 24. Several Coronado Village residents followed Parker at the podium and echoed concerns about real-estate values and neighborhood safety, asking whether the city could advocate for the neighborhood and whether residents could coordinate and petition the school board.
Mayor and staff responded that the city does not have jurisdiction over school-owned property and encouraged residents to attend and comment at the Judson School Board meeting. Staff and council suggested residents contact school-board members and use the district meetings as the appropriate venue for immediate influence. Council and staff also offered to assist residents by supplying contact information for representatives and by including the topic on a future council agenda if residents wanted the city to take a more formal position.
Why it matters: Residents reported worry that a district alternative program located adjacent to a residential neighborhood could affect perceptions of safety and property values. The district’s decisions about facility repurposing are made by Judson ISD, but residents asked the city to use its influence and to coordinate community input to the school board.
Key details - Resident request: add Coronado Village Elementary repurposing to the Feb. 18 council agenda for discussion (resident requested; staff noted next Judson board meeting is Feb. 20 and Judson administration meeting Feb. 24). - Jurisdiction: City staff said the city lacks legal jurisdiction over Judson ISD property but encouraged residents to attend Judson meetings and offered to provide contact information for school-board members.
