Council lowers Harbor Heights speed limit to 15 mph after resident push

The Aransas Pass City Council on Monday approved Ordinance 2024-4477 to amend the code of ordinances and set a 15-mile-per-hour speed limit for the Harbor Heights subdivision.
Staff presented a petition of resident requests and said many residents in Harbor Heights asked for a reduced speed limit to protect children and pedestrians. Dee McCready, speaking for neighborhood residents and administrators of a neighborhood Facebook group, said 77 respondents favored either 15 or 20 mph and that “75% are wanting the 15.” McCready said evening congestion, parked cars and children on scooters made 15 mph preferable.
Several council members and residents agreed that the interior streets are curved and often congested, making lower speeds safer. Melinda Williams, a local realtor and property manager, told the council she sometimes nearly had accidents on the narrow streets and supported an even lower posted speed in the neighborhood.
Councilmember David (staff) said he had driven the streets during the day and found 20 mph comfortable but that residents who live there likely have better perspective; he said he would not oppose 15 mph. The motion to approve Ordinance 2024-4477 (changing the Harbor Heights streets to 15 mph) was made, seconded and approved on a voice vote; the transcript records 'Aye' from the council and no recorded opposition.
The ordinance amends section 28-22 of the code to list specific streets in Harbor Heights with the new 15 mph limit. Staff said signage will be installed to reflect the change.
