Public Arts Committee sets Bruce Johnson opening for April 5; committee plans logistics and separate celebration for Ned Kahn work

Sebastopol’s Public Arts Committee agreed to hold an opening for the Bruce Johnson sculpture on Saturday, April 5, and to keep the related Ned Kahn celebration about a month apart, the committee decided during its meeting.

Committee members said they want separate events so each artist’s work receives its own public recognition. “Ned thought it would be good to have two separate functions,” a committee member reported, citing conversations with the artist. Tori and Kendra, who spoke for the Johnson installation, said either an early-April or early-June opening would work for them; they welcomed an April 5 date and offered help with invitations and outreach.

The committee moved to begin logistics planning at upcoming meetings. Staff committed to send past invitation templates and to publish a notice on the city website and local media lists; committee members and artist representatives volunteered to produce an invitation flyer and graphics. Staff said the city can post a news item and distribute to media lists including the Sebastopol Times; paid community publications were discussed but not committed.

Practical site issues were a focus. Committee members discussed parking constraints near the sculpture site, noting a nearby private lot and limited street parking on Morris Street. Public works staff described the Merricourt Trail and a proposed bridge near the pump station that will connect the trail to the sculpture site; staff said the bridge installation would be staged and assembled on site if permitting and schedules align.

Several accessibility and safety items were assigned for follow up. The committee asked whether temporary wheelchair-accessible surfacing could be provided from Highway 12 down to the site; staff said they would consult engineering and public works to avoid conflicting construction schedules with the Merricourt Trail work. Brent Reed of the Laguna Foundation (consulted by staff) recommended pruning rather than removing an oak near the spire to reduce fire risk and preserve mitigation plantings; the committee asked staff to coordinate with Reed on timing and scope of any pruning.

A bench for the site was also discussed. A committee member reported that Sturgeon’s Mill approved building a redwood bench for the site; the bench would be installed on flush pavers and temporarily secured to prevent theft. Public works said an existing bench currently faces the street and will be re‑positioned to face the sculpture from the north side of the trail.

The committee agreed to schedule a logistics discussion at its February meeting and to refine plans at the March meeting so outreach materials and site work can be completed ahead of the April opening. Artist representatives said they will provide photos and text for promotional materials; staff said it will circulate prior invitation templates and coordinate the city posting and email distribution list.

Votes at a glance: the only formal vote recorded during the meeting approved the November 12 meeting minutes. The committee passed that motion by voice vote; minutes were approved as presented.
