Council highlights: Edison training center groundbreaking, $9.2 million for Green River trail, holiday events

At the Dec. 4 Corona City Council meeting several councilmembers used their reports to highlight recent local events and regional funding awards.
Councilmembers described a Nov. 22 groundbreaking for a new Edison training center (described in the meeting as the Edison Training Academy) to be located near Magnolia and 6th Street. The project, presented at the ceremony by Edison executives including Pedro Pizarro, CEO of Edison International, is planned as a consolidated training facility for utility workers and operations staff. Councilmembers said SCE will close other training sites and operate the Corona location as a training campus. They described the facility as expected to be an economic generator for the area, increasing hotel occupancy and local spending.
Councilmembers also praised the city's recent holiday tree-lighting events and a drone show that accompanied the celebrations. Multiple councilmembers thanked community services and event staff for organizing the gatherings and noted strong turnout.
On regional funding, Councilmember Jim reported that the California Coastal Conservancy approved a $9.2 million allocation to Riverside County for the Green River connection on the Santa Ana River Trail. The funding will support a roughly 1.7-mile segment from the backside of Green River Golf Course toward the Green River connection, creating another step toward a continuous trail from the mountains to the sea. Jim and the county parks director spoke at the conservancy meeting in support of the request; the item passed unanimously.
Councilmembers encouraged residents to attend upcoming events and said they appreciated staff work on large public events and on economic-development projects such as the Edison training center.
