Efrain Dominguez elected New London council president; Akhil Peck named president pro tem

The New London City Council voted to elect Councilor Efrain Dominguez as council president and Councilor Akhil Peck as council president pro tem during its Dec. 2, 2024 meeting at City Hall. The council closed nominations by voice vote and then approved both elections by voice vote; each newly elected official received the oath of office during the meeting.
Dominguez took the oath and then addressed the council and the public, saying the council must remember its purpose. "We have been positioned in these seats of authority to make the lives of New London residents better by meeting their needs and solving problems and working together for peace," Dominguez said.
Councilor Akhil Peck was sworn in as president pro tem and spoke afterward, thanking colleagues and family. Peck described council service as a commitment rather than a hobby, saying, "This is not a job that you sign up for as far as, you know, something that you just wanna use or do as a hobby. It's something that you get into because you love your city and you love to serve people." Peck also thanked his wife, son and family members who joined him at the meeting.
After the swearing-in, the council announced committee assignments for the coming term. Highlights announced by President Dominguez included:
- Public Safety: Chair — President Dominguez; members — Amar Nertates and Jocelyn Rosario. - Public Works: Chair — John DeSantis; member — Alma Nertates. - Parks and Recreation: Chair — Jeff Hart; members — John DeSantis and Jocelyn Rosario. - Economic Development: Chair — Reona Dice; members — President Dominguez and Jeff Hart. - Finance: Chair — Alma (last name recorded as Hortates); members — John DeSantis and President Dominguez. - Administration: Chair — Jocelyn Rosario; members — Reona Dice and President Pro Tem Akhil Peck.
Councilors affirmed the assignments by voice vote during the meeting.
The new leadership and committee rosters take effect as the council begins a new cycle of business and will guide committee referrals and agendas going forward.
