Council approves CDBG grants to six nonprofits, confirms several board appointments

Morganton City Council on Dec. 2 approved the citys Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) entitlement allocations for fiscal year 2024 and confirmed multiple board appointments.
Jennifer Cannon presented the recommendations from the review committee and said the committee proposed dividing available CDBG funds evenly among six nonprofit applicants. Council approved awarding $5,148.33 each to the following organizations: The Meeting Place, The Salvation Army, Options, Burke United Christian Ministries, The House of Refuge, and The Outreach Center. City staff said most awards will fund daily operations, food pantry support and written utility assistance, with several organizations addressing hurricane-related needs.
Council also approved appointments and reappointments to boards. The mayor announced his appointment of Julia Mode to represent the City of Morganton on the Burke County Public Library Board of Trustees; council approved the appointment by voice vote. Council reappointed Phil Scarborough, Kaye Dignan, Wanda Burnett and Ron George and appointed Sarah Moses to the Community House Board of Control, with terms expiring Dec. 31, 2027. The Fireman's Relief Fund Board terms for Mark Bradshaw and public-safety appointee David Ferber were noted as expiring next month; reappointments will be made at the councils Jan. 6, 2025 meeting. Council also noted a 30-day notice that Robert Pruitt will step down from the Foothills Regional Airport Authority.
