Rankin County supervisors voted Dec. 16 to approve a memorandum of understanding with the City of Flowood clarifying the county’s role in a proposed roadway project that would run from Flowood across unincorporated Rankin County to U.S. 49.
County staff described edits made to the MOU to specify that the county is not being asked to provide financial contributions and that the county’s support is contingent on the project being funded exclusively through state and federal sources. The staff presentation said the City of Flowood intends to rely on federal and state funding for the roadway and that the edited MOU reflects that understanding.
Supervisors discussed coordination needs because a short portion of the proposed alignment falls in unincorporated Rankin County. Staff said the county has not historically had representation on the intermunicipal commission overseeing the project and that the county will seek representation. The board approved execution of the MOU and asked staff to notify the board if the funding or scope changes.
The motion passed on a voice vote; no county financial obligation was approved as part of the action. Staff said they will follow up on commission membership and whether the county will request a voting seat or ex‑officio participation.
