Multiple Fairfax High School students told the Fairfax County School Board on Oct. 9 that a postseason ban imposed by the Virginia High School League (VHSL) unfairly hurts current players and particularly seniors.
"My teammates and the community are all extremely surprised and disappointed about the unjust decision made by the VHSL regarding our playoffs," Fairfax student-athlete Nathan Hurley told the board during the public-comment period. He said seniors had worked for years for an opportunity to play in the postseason and asked the school board to "stand with" the school in asking the VHSL to lift the punishment.
Ryan Hartle, a senior and four-year varsity member, asked the board to advocate on behalf of the program. "We understand the importance of accountability, but the punishment reaches too far," Hartle said. He added that the ban affects band, cheer, dance teams and families who attend Friday-night games.
Adam Chavez, a junior, likewise said the sanction was "unjust and unfair," noting that the matter reportedly involved one player and one coach and that the coach has been placed on administrative leave. Chavez said the player no longer attends Fairfax and had been a junior-varsity player.
Speakers asked the board to press the VHSL through the appropriate channels and to pursue any available appeals or arbitration processes that might restore postseason eligibility for current student-athletes. Members of the public who addressed the board said they had reviewed VHSL handbook provisions and the division's appeal windows and urged the board to move quickly on behalf of students.
Board members did not take immediate formal action on the comments during the public comment period. The appeals process, enforcement decisions by VHSL, and any school-initiated appeals are governed by VHSL rules and timelines; the students urged FCPS to provide advocacy and legal assistance where appropriate.
