White County administration outlines snow-day pay options; no board action taken

Director Mr. D explained that the district previously allowed support staff to "bank" extra minutes (roughly 15 minutes per day) across the school year to make up for missed work caused by school closures. This year, administration began paying those extra minutes currently rather than allowing staff to bank the time. As a result, if the district later experiences several snow days, payroll deductions could be required in summer pay periods to account for missed work because the time was already paid out during the year.
Mr. D told the board the estimated cost of a full day of pay for the affected support staff is about $35,000. He said options the board could consider include continuing the current approach, offering forgiveness for a fixed number of snow days, splitting pay (for example half pay) on closure days, or using virtual instruction days where permitted to avoid lost work time. The director also noted maintenance and custodial staff must sometimes work on severe-weather days, complicating a uniform pay policy.
Board members asked clarifying questions but made no motion. The director said he would circulate additional options in the coming weeks so the board could decide before a heavy-weather period.
