Board pauses decision on deeding Bonniecroft firehall to volunteer department after residents object

White County school board members on Thursday discussed but did not approve transferring school-owned property at Bonniecroft to the Bonniecroft Volunteer Fire Department, citing community concerns and administrative conditions.
Chief Smith of the Bonniecroft Volunteer Fire Department told the board the department needs title to the building in order to apply for grants to repair roof leaks, electrical and plumbing issues and to reduce fire hazards. He said the department cannot pursue certain grant opportunities while the property is owned by the school system.
During public comment, Miss Douglas, who said she had received calls and emails from several residents, reported community opposition to "giving the property away" and urged the board to consider their concerns. Board members acknowledged the community feedback. Several trustees and the director said the property cannot be deeded to an individual and that the volunteer department would need to organize as an entity recognized by state law (for example, a 501(c)(3) or similar organization) before a transfer could be considered.
Board members also discussed alternative ways to help the department in the interim, including allowing use of school facilities for fundraising events, offering maintenance support from district staff and exploring equipment or in-kind assistance. The county survey and plat work for the property were reported as complete; the board said additional documentation and formal organization status must be provided before the matter returns as old business.
No motion to transfer the property was brought forward at the meeting. The board asked the fire department and community representatives to meet with county administrators and return with the required organizational documentation and any additional public feedback.
