Oxford City Council on Oct. 29 authorized the city manager to submit a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) application for up to $180,000 to construct a new skate park and approved a local match of up to $110,000.
Jessica (city staff) told council the application would be submitted through a cooperative agreement with Butler County; the city typically receives a local allocation equal to about 10% of the county’s annual CDBG award, though applicants may request more. She said the skate-park project qualifies under CDBG’s national objectives because the surrounding area has been classified as low- to moderate-income and the facility would be a publicly owned, universally open recreational asset.
Staff said pursuing the skate-park CDBG application means deferring other candidate projects discussed at the Capital Improvement Plan meeting, including improvements at Leonard Howe Park, shade at the new dog park and a new playground at another park. Council members acknowledged that funding choices involve trade-offs and approved the resolution by voice vote.
The resolution authorizes application for up to $180,000 and the city’s commitment to provide a local match of up to $110,000 should the grant be awarded. Staff will return with additional details if the county allocates funding to the project.
