MSAD 51 opens 'Name the School' submissions; community member recommends 'Blanchard' or 'Broadmoor'

MSAD 51 reminded the community at its Oct. 9 meeting that the district’s process to name the new primary school is open and that submissions are due at the end of the month. Melissa Porter in the superintendent’s office is listed as the contact for submissions, and the communications committee will manage the nomination process and student participation.
During public comment, Kate Blanchard Fowler, who said her family has deep historical roots in the area, urged the board to consider naming the new school either “Blanchard School” or “Broadmoor School” to honor local Broadmoor Farm and the Blanchard family’s multi‑generation ties to Cumberland. Fowler described historic uses of the land and asked that the board consider the local history as nominations are evaluated.
Trustees said they welcome community nominations and noted the new‑school naming page on the district website. Board members also said classrooms and student groups will contribute suggestions in the coming weeks; the superintendent reported the district had received four submissions as of the meeting.
No naming determination was made at the meeting. The board reiterated that the public submission deadline is the end of the month and that communications staff will collect and forward nominations for the board’s review process.
