Recreation commission recommends Laura to fill vacant fifth seat, discusses term alignment

The Brentwood Recreation Commission voted to recommend Laura to fill the commission's vacant full member seat and discussed how to align staggered terms so future expirations fall in March.

Laura told the commission she had applied previously and asked the Select Board to appoint her after a resignation created the vacancy: "I actually applied for it. And then when John resigned, I went to Andy and asked him if I could be appointed because I was the alternate who'd applied for it," she said during the meeting.

Commissioners debated whether the commission should recommend Laura immediately or re-open the vacancy for public applications. Several members argued for promoting active alternates who attend meetings; others recommended soliciting applicants to ensure an engaged alternate pool. The commission also discussed confusion over term end dates: some seats have historically expired in March while an administrative change recently listed alternates as expiring Dec. 31. Commissioners agreed to recommend that the Select Board align expiration dates on a March schedule when possible so subsequent appointments follow the same cycle.

The commission made a motion to recommend Laura for the vacant seat; the motion carried. The recommendation will go to the Select Board, which retains final appointment authority.

Why it matters: a full membership affects quorum and the commission’s ability to vote and schedule work. Commissioners also noted that shifting term expirations to a single annual cycle (March) will make recruiting and replacements easier in the future.

Next steps: Staff will place the commission’s recommendation on the Select Board agenda. If the Select Board does not appoint Laura the commission discussed either re-opening the recruitment for alternates or recommending an alternate replacement when Laura is elevated.
