DEIC discusses free dental clinic in Estacada and potential future DEI-run clinic

During its Sept. 4 meeting the Estacada Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee discussed a free dental clinic that a committee member and her husband organize each year and explored whether the committee could support or host a similar clinic in Estacada.
A committee member described the clinic’s scale and funding: the clinic is supported by a foundation or mobile medical teams that supply equipment and sterilization; grant money covers liability insurance and the foundation’s fee. The member said the clinic provided care for 142 patients in one day last year, including crowns, extractions, fillings, cleanings and temporary prosthetics. That member said the committee does not need to run or staff a clinic this year because existing volunteers and staff are already committed to an Oct. 6 event, but suggested that DEIC consider organizing a local clinic as a goal for the following year.
Members discussed implications for funding and reporting: the clinic’s organizer said the program must track city-specific patient metrics because a grant from the city of Sandy requires reporting how many patients are from Sandy versus other nearby communities. Committee members suggested the DEIC could host a future clinic or coordinate with regional organizations such as Northwest Medical Teams or a local foundation to bring services into Estacada.
Next steps: the committee agreed to add consideration of a DEIC-supported dental clinic as a future goal and to revisit the idea during goal-setting for the next year.
