Council proclaims Black History Month; Progressive Baptist Church leaders outline youth programs and planned facility

The St. Paul City Council on Feb. 5 adopted a resolution recognizing Black History Month and used the item to spotlight work by Progressive Missionary Baptist Church and its nonprofit arm, ProSeed.
Council Member Johnson introduced the resolution and called forward leaders from Progressive Baptist. Pastor Miller described long-running services including youth camps, college fairs and a food shelf that distributes an estimated 10 to 15 tons of food monthly. He said the organization plans a spring groundbreaking for a new facility that will include a University of Minnesota clinic, a mental-health clinic, a gym and spaces for youth programming.
Community leader Joanne Clark and others urged continued investment in young people and thanked the city for support. City officials noted the church’s long history of neighborhood work and encouraged public attendance at ProSeed’s Feb. 22 college fair. The council adopted the resolution by unanimous voice vote.
Why it matters: The item formalizes the city’s recognition of Black History Month and directs public attention to longstanding neighborhood programs on the East Side, including an anticipated facility expansion and college-access programming that organizers said helps students matriculate to college.
