Council adopts resolution recognizing Mitra Jalali’s service as she announces leave for health

The St. Paul City Council on Feb. 5 unanimously adopted a resolution recognizing Council President Mitra Jalali’s leadership and public service and proclaimed Feb. 5, 2025, to be Mitra Jalali Day in the city of Saint Paul.
Members and invited guests offered tributes before the vote: Attorney General Keith Ellison, Mayor Melvin Carter III and Deputy Mayor Tenter each spoke about Jalali’s leadership and community impact. Mayor Carter read a proclamation declaring the day in her honor. Council Member Johnson moved approval; the council adopted the resolution by voice vote (five in favor, none opposed).
Jalali told the chamber she has decided to take a leave for health reasons. “I had to make a radical decision for myself that my health was gonna matter more than anyone else's emotions,” she said. Jalali said she is grateful for colleagues and staff and that she plans to return to community work in a more sustainable role.
