Council advances rezoning request on West Side at 25 George Street East to public hearing

St. Paul planning staff told the City Council Feb. 5 that a West Side property at 25 George Street East currently zoned B1 (local business) has an application to rezone to H1 (residential) to allow construction of a single-family home.
Planner Chris Hong said the parcel sits just west of Robert Street in an area with primarily residential uses and some nearby mixed-use buildings. The district council did not take a position on the rezoning and the planning commission recommended approval. The council laid the item over to Feb. 12 for a public hearing and second reading.
Why it matters: The rezoning would change the zoning map for one parcel and permit a residential use consistent with the character of surrounding blocks. Planning staff noted that approval of a rezoning does not require the owner to build the proposed project.
The council sent the ordinance for second reading and public hearing on Feb. 12.
