Saline boys volleyball thanked at board meeting; district and public speakers reference varsity plans

Members of the Saline boys volleyball team and supporters addressed the school board to thank district leaders after the team’s multi-year effort toward varsity recognition.
At the start of public comment, Dan Rauten, speaking for the Saline boys volleyball group, said the team began as a club in 2022 and that the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) had approved boys volleyball as a varsity sport. “We started in, 2022 as a club and after 4 seasons, we've been given the opportunity with the MHSAA letting boys volleyball become a varsity sport,” Rauten said. He and other speakers thanked Superintendent Kowalski, the athletics department and community-education staff for support.
Gwen Burns, a Saline High School senior, also spoke during public comment to thank those who supported the program and coaches who helped the team reach varsity status.
Later in the meeting, Superintendent Kowalski told the board the district has “officially added boys volleyball as a self funded varsity sport for this coming spring,” and thanked athletics and community education staff for their work. The superintendent credited student interest and community support for the decision.
Board members congratulated players and staff and wished the program success next season. The board did not take a formal vote on creating the program during this meeting; remarks were made as recognition and update.
