Tim Austin, chair of the board finance committee and the district treasurer, reported to the board that district finance staff are monitoring an ongoing statewide budget impasse. The committee reviewed results of a statewide survey that indicated roughly 43% of responding districts said they would not be able to make payroll without the October state payment; Austin and administration said Saline Area Schools is not among those at immediate risk.
Austin said the district has approximately three months’ operating capacity in its fund balance and that enrollment is trending better than budgeted. Finance staff indicated the district’s audit is “looking really good” and no findings were being tracked; the full audit will be presented to the board in November. Board members asked clarifying questions about district exposure and were told enrollment and headcount are performing better than forecasted.
The board did not take formal fiscal action at the meeting; administrators said they will present the finalized audit and fund-balance projections at a future meeting.
