Third-grade buddies and high-school Link Crew present programs at board meeting

At the Saline Area Schools Board meeting, students and principals presented two student-led programs designed to help younger and new students acclimate to school.
Emily Sickler, principal of Harvest Elementary School, introduced five third-grade students who described the school’s third-grade buddies program. Students said buddies welcome Young Fives and kindergarteners on the first day, lead them from the gym to classrooms, read to them and make locker surprises to help them feel comfortable. Sickler told the board the program begins the second day of school and helps ease transitions for early learners.
Students from Saline High School’s Link Crew spoke next. Link Crew students said the program pairs upperclassmen with incoming freshmen to build community, provide orientation activities, run lessons throughout the year, and host social events. Student presenters described application and training processes for link leaders and noted they provide year-long advisory support for freshmen.
The board applauded both presentations. Principal Sickler and the Link Crew advisors — identified in the meeting as Mr. Stuckey and Ms. Schroeder — and the student presenters received thanks from board members.
