Several residents used the Jan. 14 public-comment period to press the Board of Supervisors on housing stability, building-site security and a hazardous ramp at the county building.
Lisa Smith, who identified herself as a resident of the mobile-home park behind the Ruckersville Wawa property, said residents were promised relocation assistance when the developer (Milestone) acquired the parcel and that the developer is now not fulfilling the verbal commitments. Smith said residents fear eviction notices and reported that construction-site trespassing has created safety and privacy problems for neighbors; she asked the board to hold Milestone accountable and to secure the site. The board asked staff to prepare a report and to send someone to inspect why the construction site was not secure; a board member requested that staff return with a report to the next meeting.
Jennifer Lewis Fowler (Midway District) urged action on a ramp at the county building after an earlier comment noted a significant fall. Fowler said the ramp is “not currently ADA compliant” and asked for an estimated time for repairs; the board requested staff follow up with a report and timeline.
Many public commenters also raised the draft social media policy. Ken Copeland and others told the board they were concerned the draft’s broad definitions could include email or video recordings and could chill public comment; the board directed staff to redraft the policy with a narrower focus on county-managed accounts and employee guidance.
Board response and staff direction Board members acknowledged the concerns. On the Ruckersville construction site the board directed staff to investigate site security and consider enforcement steps; on the ramp the board asked for a report and timeline for hazard correction. Regarding the social media policy the board directed staff to return with a narrower, staff‑focused draft (an HR appendix or county-managed-account policy).
