Summary
The governor described a Green Growth Initiative led by Northern Marianas College (NMC) to pursue UN Sustainable Development Goals, support regenerative agriculture, local hydroponics for school meals and recognition of coral reefs as critical natural infrastructure.
Governor Arnold I. Palacios said the administration has launched the CNMI Green Growth Initiative in partnership with Northern Marianas College (NMC) to pursue the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals and to support regenerative agriculture, local food production and reef conservation.
Palacios said NMC’s Cooperative Research, Extension, and Education Services (CREEES) has held regenerative-agriculture workshops across Saipan, Rota and Tinian, partnered with USDA and DLNR and assisted more than 40 families to establish home food forests. Patty Coleman, chair of the Green Growth Initiative working group, told the session NMC established a hydroponics facility (Coral Coast Foundation Facility) producing leafy greens that are being used in the public school meal program.
Palacios said the administration and the governor of Guam signed an executive order recognizing coral reef as critical natural infrastructure to be integrated into disaster preparedness and recovery planning. He also said the Green Growth Initiative will launch a public dashboard to measure progress on SDG indicators.
The remarks described program activity and partnerships; no new environmental regulation or statutory action was enacted during the session.
