SPCSA approves consent agenda, accepts Battle Born Academy closure plan and elects new chair and vice chair

The Nevada State Public Charter School Authority approved a set of governance actions on June 18, including the consent agenda, acceptance of a voluntary charter surrender from Battle Born Academy (BBA) and elections for chair and vice chair.
The board first approved the consent agenda after a motion and second; Chair Holmes Sutton called for ayes and the motion carried.
SPCSA staff reported that on June 18 the BBA board voted to voluntarily surrender its charter contract and close the school after the 2024–25 school year. Executive Director Melissa Makadan said staff supported the BBA board’s decision and recommended the appointment of Joshua Kern to act as the school’s administrator during the closure process under NRS 388A.306. Board member Ivar Aldaba moved to accept BBA’s surrender, approve Kern’s appointment and approve the closure plan; Member Shanti Rosales seconded. Chair Holmes Sutton called for ayes and the motion carried.
The board also held elections. Member Amber Haddad moved to nominate Vice Chair Thigpen to serve as board chair; Member Whitaker seconded and the nomination was approved by voice vote. Member Ivar Aldaba moved to nominate Patricia Haddad Bennett as vice chair; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. The chair thanked outgoing student representative Matthew Beru and joined other board members in recognizing his service.
SPCSA staff said it would work with Joshua Kern and with nearby sponsored schools to support displaced Battle Born Academy students and would oversee closure tasks required by statute.
