The Select Board heard the Recreation Department’s municipal moment on June 9, which outlined the department’s summer schedule and program offerings.
Recreation Director Chris Fogarty reviewed major events: the town carnival at Town Park is scheduled June 26–29 with fireworks on Saturday, June 28 (approximately 9:30 p.m.); the Father’s Day Fishing Derby at South End Pond is June 15 at 9 a.m.; goat‑related events (storytime and goat yoga) are planned for June 21 at the Town Hall courtyard; and a summer concert series will run on Wednesdays in August at the bandstand, sponsored by Middlesex Savings Bank and the Millis Cultural Council. Fogarty noted the fireworks display minimum cost is $10,000 and that a separate fireworks gift fund is used for donations.
The recreation director also described expanded full‑day camp options and a partnership with program providers (e.g., Wicked Cool for Kids) to extend half‑day offerings to a full day. Staff introduced camp counselor and lead‑counsel appointments included on the meeting agenda.
Separately, the board approved the Millis Boosters’ Run Back to School event to be held Sunday, Sept. 28, from 7 a.m. to noon, with coordination among police, fire, DPW and the schools.
Why it matters: The recreation events and expanded camp options provide seasonal activity for families; the tourist‑style events (fireworks, concerts) contribute to town center activity and small‑business patronage.
Next steps: Recreation will publish schedules, manage registrations and continue logistics coordination with DPW, police and fire for events.
