Advisory commission approves sending fenced play-area proposal to county commissioners

At its June 3 meeting the Carbon County Animal Shelter Advisory Commission voted to send a proposal to county commissioners seeking approval to construct a fenced outdoor play area for shelter dogs. The commission approved the motion by voice vote after members discussed location options, use restrictions and liability concerns.
The proposal would create an outdoor, staff-supervised run not open to the public. Commission members discussed potential locations: a grass area adjacent to the shelter’s memorial garden or a small corner parcel nearby. Tom (Director) said the fenced area would let dogs "experience each other a little better" and provide enrichment that can reveal a dog's personality for prospective adopters. Members emphasized that the proposed space would be limited to shelter dogs and staff to reduce liability.
The record shows donated funds are available for projects at the shelter, and commissioners discussed routing the request through county procurement so local contractors could bid on construction. One member noted County work on a public dog park being advanced by "Pascagone," and said the shelter-run area would be distinct because it would be restricted to shelter use.
The commission also reported it has sent information to county commissioners about a young man who wants to do an Eagle Scout project building a weather-protected donation box outside the shelter. Members described prior scout and volunteer projects as "excellent and a big benefit to the shelter." No formal county approvals for either the fenced run or the Eagle Scout project were recorded in the meeting; both items were sent to county commissioners or left for commissioners' consideration.
"So can I have a motion to get this approved and send it to the commissioners?" the Chair asked; the motion was made, seconded and approved by voice vote. The transcript records "All in favor, aye." The meeting then continued with other new-business items and adjourned later in the agenda.
