Sheriff James Crawford asked the Board of County Commissioners to approve expenditure of Law Enforcement Trust Fund (LETF) monies at the June 19, 2025 meeting. The sheriff said the county’s routine LETF distribution is roughly $25,000 and usually funds local nonprofits and programs; this year he requested $55,000 total to cover recurring grants plus two additional items.
What was requested: the sheriff said his typical annual LETF recipients include United Way, Drug Free Hardee and Florida Sheriff Youth Ranches; together those usually receive about $25,000. This year he requested an additional $30,000, split in two $15,000 asks: one to buy a patrol K9 (estimated at about $15,710 including supplies) and $15,000 to host and fund attendance at the NIA Commander's Academy leadership school.
Why it matters: the sheriff said the LETF is funded mainly by asset forfeitures and related receipts. Because LETF disbursements are controlled by statute, the sheriff said any withdrawal requires board approval.
Commissioner questions and clarifications: commissioners asked whether the money is already in the LETF, and Crawford answered that the funds are available in the trust but the board must authorize their release. Commissioners also asked for confirmation of the estimated cost for the dog and training; the sheriff cited $15,000 for the commander's school and about $15,710 for the dog and supplies.
Next steps: the sheriff said he will present a formal amendment or resolution at the next meeting to effect the transfers from the LETF.
