The Aberdeen School District’s staff wellness challenge concluded this spring with broad participation across district sites, the board heard Tuesday.
Assistant superintendent Melissa Dickey reported the “race to summer” challenge ran 14 weeks and rotated seven wellness topics including water intake, exercise, sleep, healthy eating, gratitude and mindfulness. District officials said 490 employees participated weekly across 10 locations: nine schools and the district technology center.
The program used an honor system for weekly points and culminated in an in-person event on the final day of school, May 20. Because of rain, organizers moved the event into a gym; about 240 people attended. District staff thanked local businesses and the foundation for donated prizes.
Organizers credited Brenda Heinert with creating traveling trophies for weekly winners. The district named Neecee Lee the overall champion and Mike Miller earned the spirit award.
Board members discussed repeating the challenge in future years, possibly expanding it to students. “We did have some good feedback from people. I think we will definitely try it again,” one staff presenter said.
No formal action was required; the report was presented as part of routine updates to the board.
