Ashley Seeklander, a school counselor at Lincoln Elementary, was recognized Tuesday by the Aberdeen School Board after being named South Dakota Counselor of the Year.
Board members introduced Seeklander at the May 27 meeting and played a short video highlighting her work. Colleagues praised her involvement with students, staff and parents and noted her role organizing the building’s SAT team and supporting local agencies that serve students.
Seeklander said the honor took her by surprise. “It came as a tremendous surprise. I was not expecting it at all,” she told the board.
Board members and staff described Seeklander as a strong communicator and a team player who supports students with sensory breaks and organizes routines such as greeting students each morning. The board acknowledged her local, state and national engagement on behalf of students.
The recognition was presented as a "good news" item near the start of the meeting; no formal board action was required.
The board meeting continued with routine business after the presentation.
